Method, licences and limits

Honest about what each value means

Demand, generation, forecast and interchange come from the US Energy Information Administration's Hourly Electric Grid Monitor (Form EIA-930), a public federal dataset. Weather context comes from NOAA/National Weather Service (api.weather.gov), a free public API with no key required, using one representative city per region rather than full regional coverage. This product does not publish carbon intensity or instantaneous grid frequency — EIA-930 has no equivalent field, and no substitute is shown. The national Lower-48 view does not display an interchange figure, since a single national import/export number is not meaningful the way it is for one balancing authority. History covers up to 30 days from an initial official backfill plus ongoing hourly collection; data updates hourly at the source and this site refreshes no more often than every 55 minutes. Generation, fuel mix and interchange figures settle roughly 18-24 hours behind the demand reading — this is disclosed per reading, not hidden.

Why doesn't the national view show interchange?

EIA-930's Lower-48 total already nets out inter-region flows; a national import/export figure would not be meaningful the way it is for a single balancing authority.

What counts as renewable or low-carbon here?

Renewable is wind, solar, hydro and geothermal. Low-carbon adds nuclear. These match the EIA's fuel-type categories, not an estimate by this site.

Why is generation sometimes older than demand?

EIA-930 publishes demand near-real-time but settles net generation, fuel mix and interchange roughly 18-24 hours later. The reading's own timestamp and any settlement-lag note make this explicit; nothing lagged is labelled "live".

What does the map show?

Representative centre points for each supported region, not service-territory boundaries — no reliable public-domain balancing-authority polygon dataset was available. Interchange lines use official EIA total-interchange figures.

What generates the grid-update articles?

The same locally hosted model used for the GB site, evidence-checked against this page's own EIA/NWS data before publication, generated on a staggered schedule so it never competes with GB article generation for the same machine.
